One of the most common questions asked of a dancer is "Why do you dance?" There are so many ways to answer this question? To each of us it can be a very personal and intricate answer. At the same time it can be as simple as "Because I like to dance" or "Dancing is a part of who I am."
Dancing offers numerous benefits, one of which is its positive impact on our physical well-being. Engaging in dance involves movement and exercise, allowing us to work our muscles, enhance oxygen circulation, develop strength, improve mobility, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Additionally, dancing helps build endurance and is recognized for its calorie-burning effects.
Engaging in dancing is beneficial for mental well-being as well. It has the potential to lower anxiety levels and alleviate stress. By participating in dancing, endorphins are released, contributing to a reduction in depression and a boost in self-confidence. Research has shown a connection between dancing and enhanced memory and cognitive abilities. When attending a dance class, instructors often advise leaving personal issues outside the dance studio or channeling emotions into the dance movements thus creating an escape from our routine obligations.
Dancing can provide a means to communicate that which words cannot convey. It serves as a form of artistic expression, enabling us to narrate stories, convey various emotions, establish our identities, and craft something fresh and meaningful in the present moment. Dancing can be seen as a living art form. While choreography can be repeated and recreated, each dance performance is uniquely its own masterpiece.
Dancers often say, "once a dancer, always a dancer.". You define yourself as a dancer through your choice to dance. Your identity as a dancer is solely your own to determine. No one else gets to decide if you are a dancer or not. Your body is your extraordinary tool, and you understand it best. Continue to move, feel, create, and express. Why do you dance? Whatever the reason, just keep dancing.
